Maria Gabriela Aguirre - The Empty Chair

A single plastic chair, stark against a black background. Empty, yet full of presence. This is John's chair.

For 14 years, he lived next door, alone. We rarely spoke - until 2 years ago when illness brought us together. In his final years, we became true neighbours, sharing conversations and quiet companionship. My family supported him until he passed in January.

Now, his chair stands as a symbol of presence and absence, of connection made too late but cherished nonetheless. This painting honours John and reminds me: I am here. I can reach out. I can make a difference.

20 Latin Artist from The Latin American Diaspora.

Inspired and rooted in connection to self, to story and the layers that make us who we are, this show featured three pieces exploring identity, memory and belonging through paintings.

Bailo a Mi Manera - The rhythm of my Uruguayan Heritage express through @mariu_meneses mesmerising Afro-Uruguayan dance.

Hablo Como Puedo - this pieces carries the rhythm of my language - a mix of english and spanish words (Spanglish) translating before speaking.

Me Veo Como Soy - Rhythm of my blood - my ancestry and the women who shaped me. This last piece for this show focused on the women in my life, My Abuelitas Zulema and Elena, My Mama, My Hija Billie Rose. Mis Raices.

All three pieces carry the colours blue, orange and white representing Honesty, Heritage and the ocean that separates my two cultures, Uruguay and Australia.

When We Were Young - Cuando Eramos Joven.

A series that explores migration, memory and the families we create when we find ourselves far from home.

When We Were Young is about chosen sisterhood. A friendship formed in migration and carried across more than 5 decades. It asks whether home is a country, a memory, or the person who has known every version of you.

Featuring my childhood, life long best friend/ sister, Sylvia. In every painting we are side by side sharing memories, experiences, in our matching outfits.
